Introduction to Home Recording — 4-Week Course

Want to start record­ing music at home but don’t know where to begin? Our Intro­duc­tion to Home Record­ing class is designed for musi­cians, song­writ­ers, and audio enthu­si­asts who want to take con­trol of their sound — right from their own space.

What You’ll Learn:

Over 4 weeks, you’ll build a sol­id foun­da­tion in the tools and tech­niques of mod­ern home record­ing. This hands-on course cov­ers:

  • Under­stand­ing Audio Inter­faces & Record­ing Equip­ment
    Learn what gear you real­ly need and how to set it up prop­er­ly.

  • Intro­duc­tion to Dig­i­tal Audio Work­sta­tions (DAWs)
    Get famil­iar with pop­u­lar DAWs like Log­ic, Garage­Band and Pro Tools — no expe­ri­ence required.

  •  Basic Record­ing Tech­niques
    Learn how to record vocals, instru­ments, and MIDI with clar­i­ty and con­fi­dence.

  • Import­ing Stems & Man­ag­ing Ses­sions
    Dis­cov­er how to work with mul­ti­track audio files and keep your ses­sions orga­nized.

  • Intro to Mix­ing & Edit­ing
    Explore the essen­tials of EQ, com­pres­sion, pan­ning, and basic track edit­ing.

  • Mas­ter­ing Basics
    Learn sim­ple tech­niques to pre­pare your final mix for stream­ing, shar­ing, or release.

Record­ing 101 Class: 4-Week Syl­labus

Week 1: Inter­face Overview & Equip­ment Basics

  • What is an inter­face?
  • Key fac­tors to con­sid­er when select­ing an inter­face (e.g., inputs/outputs, con­nec­tion types).
  • Overview of JamSpot’s record­ing equip­ment, from small and large inter­faces to dig­i­tal mix­ers like the X32.
  • Under­stand­ing TS, TRS, and XLR cables.
  • Intro­duc­tion to pop­u­lar micro­phones for home record­ing (e.g., SM57, SM58, and large diaphragm con­denser mics).
  • Home­work: Research audio inter­faces.

Week 2: Intro­duc­tion to DAWs (Dig­i­tal Audio Work­sta­tions)

  • Overview of DAW options (free and paid).
  • What are DAWs used for?
  • Strengths and weak­ness­es of dif­fer­ent DAWs.
  • Tips for select­ing the right DAW based on your needs.
  • Home­work: Down­load a DAW and the pro­vid­ed STEMS from your instruc­tor.

Week 3: Basic Record­ing & STEM Import­ing

  • Step-by-step guide to cap­tur­ing audio: con­nect­ing your mic to the inter­face and record­ing in a DAW.
  • How to import and orga­nize tracks in your DAW.
  • Label­ing and orga­niz­ing tracks effec­tive­ly.
  • Home­work: Cre­ate a basic mix using the import­ed STEMS.

Week 4: Mix­ing Fun­da­men­tals

  • Hands-on mix­ing: adjust­ing lev­els using faders.
  • Intro­duc­tion to EQ and com­pres­sion basics.
  • Explor­ing effects like reverb and delay.
  • Prac­tice mix­ing tracks.
  • Prop­er­ly bounc­ing (export­ing) audio files.
  • Intro­duc­tion to Mas­ter­ing
