3 Chords to the Stage

This work­shop is designed to pro­vide begin­ner to inter­me­di­ate level play­ers with the expe­ri­ence of play­ing in a band. We’ll begin with a selec­tion of well known 3–4 chord rock songs (Stones, Petty, Eagles, Sky­nard, etc.) and expand the reper­toire over time based on sug­ges­tions from mem­bers of the group.

After about 10–12 weeks, this group will have an oppor­tu­nity to play a gig, either in the Show­case Room @ JamSpot or at a local club. Depend­ing on the band mem­bers, the group may also seek addi­tional gigs or per­haps go into the record­ing studio.

Play­ers in this work­shop should have a basic under­stand­ing of their instru­ment. Drum­mers should be able to keep a steady rock beat, and gui­tar and key­board play­ers should be famil­iar with most of the major chords. Over the course of the work­shop we will encour­age play­ers to develop new play­ing skills, includ­ing alter­nate chord struc­tures, leads and scales and dif­fer­ent types of drum rhythms.

The Music Work­shops at JamSpot get you play­ing in a band with­out any of the has­sles. Each work­shop is formed from play­ers from around the area with sim­i­lar musi­cal tastes and skill levels.

Sup­ported by a work­shop leader, the group will develop and learn a set of songs, expe­ri­enc­ing the dynam­ics of work­ing as a team and improv­ing indi­vid­ual play­ing skills.

Our work­shop lead­ers are pro­fes­sional musi­cians and expe­ri­enced music teach­ers who really know their stuff. They come to each ses­sion with a set of songs to play (sug­ges­tions are always wel­come!), help each player learn their part and lead the group through the song list. We usu­ally run through 4–5 songs at each ses­sion and we often record the best ver­sions onto a CD you can take home with you.

We offer work­shops in many styles, from clas­sic rock to funk, blues, R&B, Motown and coun­try. Most work­shops are offered in the evenings from 7:30–9:30pm. We pro­vide all of the equip­ment, includ­ing drums and keyboards.
